Series 1 opens in 1957 with young nurse Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine), who hails from the wealthy English countryside, discovering that her first placement is not the private hospital she'd expected, but Nonnatus House, a clinic run by an order of nursing nuns in London's impoverished East End. Among the patients she helps: a woman on her 25th pregnancy, a 15-year-old prostitute and an elderly soldier suffering from leg ulcers. While Jenny adjusts to her new life, fellow rookie Chummy (Miranda Hart) gets off on the wrong foot with Sister Evangelina (Pam Ferris) due to her inability to ride a bike, a skill that's needed in order to reach patients.
