Now I know that a lot of people completely hate comic book adaptations and think they are a total waste of cinematic screen time. I am very glad to say that I am not one of those people. I personally think they are fun as hell, most of the time I just have a blast watching them (save for a few exceptions). Ghost Rider was a bad film in terms of the overall movie making process, but it was a damn fun one.

This film is no different to most of the comic book adaptations that have been, and I'm sure always will be, made; they are cheesy, campy, money-making parts of the world of cinema but are so fun to watch. I was completely engrossed in the action here and just had a hell of a time watching a man turn into a flaming monster. You can't get much cooler than a guy who's head is on fire, weilding a fiery chain and ablaze on a devilish motorbike. So the main thing I label this film is "fun and enjoyable." That's not to say this is a 'good' film, because it's not. The dialogue was the main problem I had with it. It had the cheesiest dialogue and one-liners in particular than just made me roll my eyes and even laugh. The film needed abetter and more competent writer to accompany the very fun and particularly well done action sequences which are the main strength of the film. It surprised me that the brilliant writer of another comic book adaptation, Batman Begins writer David S. Goyer, produced this film so therefore why couldn't he have written it as well? I guess we will never know.

I am a long-time fan of Nicolas Cage, I don't care what anyone says, I just love to watch him in the various different roles he takes. If you can forgive the many mishap roles that he has taken over the years (ie. The Wicker Man), he is a great actor. Here he does the best he can with the very demanding role and character of Ghost Rider, and for those of you who hate him you will be glad to know that for about 60% of the movie, his face is just a flaming skull. You can tell he has a love for the comic and the character itself as he seems as if he just had so much fun playing with the one-liners and the general idea of the character. On the supporting side of things, the cast is impressive and a lot of them do well such as Wes Bentley as the Devil's son and Peter Fonda as the Devil himself. Eva Mendes did her job, she was there to look pretty, for eyecandy, and she did that job very well. The one cast member I was mad about was Sam Elliott. It wasn't Elliott's fault personally, but more his character. I just felt he was totally wasted, he's a professional seen here in an amateurs role, it's a shame...

As I have already said, the film's strength is in it's action sequences and special effects. Some of the effects in this film were amazing (in particular Cage's skin burning away to reveal a fiery skull), I must admit I was in awe at some parts. There are some (not a lot) of the effects that are pretty bad and it seems like the people in charge had to spend more on one effect and cut the budget on another. But I guess that can't be helped, right? Another weakness is the plot. However credible it might have been in comic book form, it didn't translate all that well to creen. We were just supposed to accept that this, that and the next thing were true and were really happening. I guess you just have to accept all the ludicrous things that happen as it is after all a film.

Once intended as a feature for Johnny Depp, the long-germinating feature film adaptation of Marvel Comics' cult title Ghost Rider stars Nicolas Cage as motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, who transforms into a skull-faced angel of vengeance to battle the forces of evil. Though perhaps a bit too mature for the role, Cage brings a degree of humor to the outrageous proceedings; he's well matched by the Easy Rider himself Peter Fonda, amusingly cast as Mephistopheles, the demon with whom Blaze strikes a bargain to save his father, and in turn, causes his transformation into Ghost Rider. Wes Bentley is also fine as Blackheart, the rebellious offspring of Mephistopheles, and Blazes' chief opponent in the film. They're joined by a solid supporting cast which includes Donal Logue, Eva Mendes, and Sam Elliott, but their participation and a relentless barrage of CGI effects can't hide the fact that the story itself, though largely faithful to its comic origins, is rife with clichéd characterizations and glum B-movie dialogue. Fans of the venerable title may cry foul over this adaptation (as they did over helmer Mark Steven Johnson's previous comic-to-movie feature, Daredevil), but less stringent viewers may enjoy the fiery visuals and Cage's typically quirky performance. --Paul Gaita
