So finally Tenacious D have brought us a big screen adaptation of their crazy antics; and crazy this film is. From start to finish every one of the jokes are just so random and don't make much sense but that's the beauty of Tenacious D.
Jack Black had promised us every type of laugh from gut-buster's to 'wet-willies' and there were quite a lot but they weren't as funny as promised. The film relies a lot on
your tolerance for Black's stupid behaviour in general, so if you are annoyed by him in the slightest then don't see this movie. But luckily I think he is funny as hell normally so his behaviour was funny to me.
The storyline although very stupid takes itself a little too seriously at points. Taking something as simple as travelling to somewhere to find a pick and turning it into this 'life changing' experience; it just didn't work.
There are some cool cameos from the likes of Meat Loaf, who playes Black's dad, Ben Stiller as a guitar shop owner and a pleasantly surprising role from one Tim Robbins as an old has been 'Rock 'n' Roll' star who has only one leg; crazy stuff.
The album to accompany the film basically consists of all the songs from it and because I
had heard the album before I seen this, the songs weren't as funny for me. The final
showdown is the best scene in the movie simply because of the appearance of the 'D's'
greatest creation; the depiction of the Devil, played brilliantly once again Dave Grohl.
The BIG downside to the film is the script. It really is in search of a quality script to even out the silly behaviour and the directing by Liam Lynch, although fresh, is amateurish. And another big problem the film has is that Black and Gass have not got much acting experience and in turn they don't give the BEST performances here.
This is a funny film at parts that could be annoying after a while. Some of the scenes (especially towards the end) are the highlight of the movie. If you like Tenacious D's usual stupid behaviour ie. the video for their song Tribute, then you'll love this.
Overview
Funny if you like the pair to begin with. Quite a few laughs and some memorable scenes but lacks a good script and a better director.

You don't have to be a munchie-loving stoner or an aspiring rock god to enjoy Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, but it helps. A dozen years after they introduced their mock-rock power duo on the Los Angeles club scene, Jack Black and Kyle Gass finally got the movie showcase (a partial spinoff from the D's short-lived HBO series) their fans had been waiting for, and it's a rockin' romp with plenty of crude laughs that will hit home for anyone who's ever played air guitar to Meat Loaf's "Bat out of Hell." It's a Beavis and Butt-head-like origin story, recalling the legend (ahem) of how JB (Black) and KG (Gass) met, bonded over bong-hits and rock-operatic guitar licks, then set out (on a tip from a crazed guitar-store clerk played by Ben Stiller) to find the mythic pick of destiny, used by all guitar gods and said to be fashioned from the tooth of Satan. Their quest includes a variety of well-cast cameos (including Tim Robbins, Meat Loaf, and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl as Satan himself), and there's plenty of flatulence, drug humor, at least one hilarious fantasy sequence, and outrageous sight gags too numerous to mention. Suffice it to say, it's about 90 minutes of lowbrow indulgence, and some of the jokes fall flat, but if you're a headbanger at heart, you'll know what Tenacious D is riffing on, and the sweet licks (also available on the soundtrack CD) will sound that much sweeter. If you're not ready to RAWK, this potential cult favorite may not be for you... but give it try anyway. It may not be better than Citizen Kane, but if you're properly stoked, it comes close to rock & roll heaven. --Jeff Shannon
