強納森出生於愛爾蘭首都都柏林的一個天主教家庭。剛出生時由於檢查出有嚴重的心臟問題，使其在醫院中度過人生最初的幾個月。由於家人擔心他的健康問題，剛滿周歲時便進行洗禮，成為真正的天主教徒。
童年動盪不安，3歲時，父母離異，母親便帶著他和他的3個弟弟搬到科克居住，強納森幼年時調皮又叛逆，16歲時被學校強制退學。在生活非常困苦下，他不得不多打幾份零工來貼補家用。不過在2008年，他被都柏林大學三一學院哲學學會授予榮譽贊助。
