早稲田大学卒業後、劇団「innerchild」を主宰。作家・演出家・俳優として活躍。長年舞台での活躍が中心だったが、2016年、NHK大河ドラマ「真田丸」に塙団右衛門役で出演し注目を集め、テレビやスクリーンにも活躍の場を広げる。TVドラマ「コンフィデンスマンJP」「SUITS スーツ」（ともに18）と立て続けに月9ドラマに出演し、45歳にして突如ブレイクを果たす。近年の出演作に、TVドラマ「集団左遷!!」、映画「コンフィデンスマンJP」、NHK連続テレビ小説「なつぞら」（すべて19）などがある。
