映画、舞台、TVと幅広く活躍するベテラン俳優。王立演劇アカデミー卒業後、ロンドンの名門劇団に所属し、シェイクスピアから現代劇まで様々な作品で座長を務めローレンス・オリビエ賞をはじめとした演劇賞を幾度も獲得する。スクリーンデビューはローレンス・オリビエ主演の「オセロ」（65）で、80年代後半から映画の出演が増える。シリーズ第3弾「ハリー・ポッターと炎のゴブレット」（05）から、故リチャード・ハリスに代わりダンブルドア教授を演じる。その他「スリーピー・ホロウ」（99）、「ゴスフォード・パーク」（01）、「グッド・シェパード」（06）などに出演している。
