早稲田大学在学中の92年、文学座研究所に入所。93年TVドラマ「街角」でデビューし、「午後の遺言状」（95）で映画に初出演。NHK連続テレビ小説「ふたりっ子」（96～97）で広く知られるようになり、森田監督「（ハル）」（96）では日本アカデミー賞新人俳優賞を受賞する。演劇ではストレートプレイへの出演が中心だったが、00年ミュージカル「エリザベート」で演技の幅を広げた。その後は主演ドラマ「蝉しぐれ」（03）で国内外の賞を多数受賞し、「エースをねらえ！」（04）、「不機嫌なジーン」（05）などで活躍。NHK大河ドラマ「風林火山」（07）では主人公・山本勘助役、「仁 JIN」シリーズ（09、11）では坂本龍馬役を演じた。横山秀夫原作の「臨場」ではドラマ版（09～10）・劇場版（12）とも主演を務める。13年7月10日、芸能活動時の名の読み方を本名の「まさあき」から「せいよう」に改めた。
