Jan Bijvoet took his first steps as an actor in the theater in 1991 with the Dutch Theater of Ghent in Jozef in Egypt. He had two other roles with this company, one in Nachtelijk Symposium, the other in Gruis. He then moved on to TG Ceremonia by Eric De Volder. With the company of the Blue Monday, he played the role of old aunt Vera in Voor een pensioen by Luk Perceval. From 1998, he began to appear more often on the stage. He played in Ivanov, L. King of Pain, Asem, De Jossen and Peer Gynt, all with Het Toneelhuis.
In 2005, he joined the artistic core of the Zuidpool Theater. He obtained roles in Siberië, Oorlog, Hooglied, Dus (een Heizeldrama), Nachtlied, Cockfish and kReon.
He was nominated for the Flemish Cultural Prize for the performing arts in 2007.
