This comedy series is based on a sitcom of the same name that ran from 1975 to 1984, and follows the life of a Cuban-American family. Penelope (Justina Machado) is a nurse in the Army dealing with depression and anxiety after returning from service; Dwayne (Todd Grinnell) is Penelope's best friend, her landlord and a womanizer; Elena (Isabella Gomez) is Penelope's teenage daughter, who's dealing with personal issues that might affect her relationship with her family; Alex (Marcel Ruiz) is Penelope's son, who's trying to be popular at school; Lydia (Rita Moreno) is Penelope's very traditional Cuban mother. In Season 1, the family go through changes and difficult times, and deal with issues such as PTSD, depression and relationship drama.
