The comedy series based on a novel written by Redmond Satran starts with Liza (Sutton Foster) dropping Caitlin (Tessa Albertson) off at college, where she meets her daughter's roommate and her parents; and in true Chekhov's gun fashion, they end up being the reason she ultimately doesn't show up at her date with Charles (Peter Hermann). The love triangle between Liza, Charles and Josh (Nico Tortorella) comes to an end, with Liza deciding to continue her romance with the younger man—for now. The rest of the season centers around the problems the men in Liza's life cause and how she gets jealous over Charles, as her friends go through some issues of their own: Kelsey (Hilary Duff) finally comes to term with Thad's death, in an unexpected way; Diana (Miriam Shor) realizes work shouldn't be her only priority; Lauren (Molly Bernard) and Maggie (Debbi Mazar) have their relationship tested when Lauren sleeps with a man.
