What are DVD region codes?

Because DVD is subject to the same issues of piracy and market sharing that govern the entire video industry, region encoding was introduced to set geopolitical boundaries for compatibility of DVDs and players. The DVD region code identifies a DVD's compatibility with the players typically sold in a particular this region. The world is divided into six major geographical DVD regions, with two additional regions reserved for special use.

Useful Information

Although DVD players sold in a specific region can usually read discs from other regions, it is still important considering that the video format used to press DVDs vary from one region to another. For example, Region 1 discs are pressed using NTSC while Region 2 and some region 4 use PAL. Thus, you will need either a video format converter or a DVD player with a built-in converter to make sure you can play discs from other regions.

Region Code Enhancement (RCE) is another important issue for DVD region coding. RCE is deigned to prevent viewing a Region 1 disc on a Region-Free DVD player. It will not prevent watching the movie on a Multi-Region Player. This prevents from hacking the player viewing all regions discs. So far, some studios like Warner Bros, New Line, Columbia and now select MGM have this feature.
