高捷年少時曾學習過西餐烹飪，並曾在圓山飯店擔任過助廚。後來經製片張華坤引薦給導演侯孝賢，因此入行。1987年由侯孝賢執導的電影《尼羅河女兒》，成為高捷入行後首部演出的作品。高捷在1992年電影《少年吔，安啦！》中，首度演出黑道大哥的角色，爾後在多部電影中飾演黑道大哥角色，使得高捷在角色形象上是深植觀眾眼中「黑道大哥」。1998年，在侯孝賢執導的電影《海上花》出現的宴席，桌上的各式菜餚是高捷憑著過去的廚藝所親自料理。此外，除了在電影方面，高捷的演藝事業也跨足了電視，並曾獲得亞洲電視獎影帝、金鐘獎最佳男配角等獎項。
