貝茲出生於田納西州孟斐斯，父親Langdon Doyle Bates為機械工程師，母親Bertye Kathleen（閨姓Talbot）為家庭主婦。貝茲是家中的老么，有兩名姊姊。貝茲的高（外）祖父於十九世紀從愛爾蘭移民到紐奧良，更曾是美國總統安德魯·傑克遜的醫生。

貝茲大學於南方衛理公會大學就讀，主修戲劇，期間為姊妹會Alpha Delta Pi會員。1969年畢業後，翌年到紐約發展事業
