1996年，萊特嫁給美國男演員西恩·潘，並且冠夫姓更名成羅蘋·蓋兒·萊特·潘。萊特與西恩·潘交往超過10年，並且在1996年4月27日結婚。他們的女兒狄蘭·法藍斯 (Dylan Frances）出生於1991年4月13日，而他們的兒子霍柏·傑克 (Hopper Jack）出生於1993年8月6日，一家子居住在加州羅斯，不過在2007年12月，潘氏夫妻宣布他們要協議離婚，並於2010年正式仳離。萊特在此前曾與男演員戴恩·威瑟斯普（Dane Witherspoon）結婚，婚姻只維持了兩年便結束。萊特最初是在肥皂劇《Santa Barbara》演出，並且獲得3項艾美獎提名。之後開始演出電影，包括《綠野芳蹤》以及《阿甘正傳》，尤其在後片的演出讓她獲得金球獎最佳女配角獎提名。萊特曾經因為當時正在懷孕，而推掉《俠盜王子羅賓漢》的戲約。
