1982-

85年、TVドラマ「毎度おさわがせします」で女優としてデビュー。その直後に歌手としても活動を始め、その年の第27回日本レコード大賞で最優秀新人賞、第23回ゴールデンアロー賞を受賞する。“みぽりん”の愛称で絶大な人気を誇り、映画「ビー・バップ・ハイスクール」（85）や、「君の瞳に恋してる！」（89）といったフジテレビの月9ドラマで活躍。シングル「ただ泣きたくなるの」や「世界中の誰よりきっと」（中山美穂＆WANDS）などもヒットした。映画では「Love Letter」（95）で第38回ブルーリボン賞主演女優賞、「東京日和」（97）で日本アカデミー優秀主演女優賞を受賞。02年、作家・辻仁成と結婚し、翌03年、フランス・パリに移住する。ドラマ「ホーム＆アウェイ」（02）以降、女優業から遠ざかっていたが、辻原作の映画「サヨナライツカ」（09）で活動を再開。その後、「新しい靴を買わなくちゃ」（12）などに出演する。
