映画「死者の学園」（00）の深田恭子の相手役オーディションに参加した（結果は落選）のをきっかけに、芸能界入り。00年、任天堂のCMでデビュー。園子温監督作「自殺サークル」（02）で映画に初出演する。TVドラマ「ウォーターボーイズ」（03）で注目されるようになり、「世界の中心で、愛をさけぶ」（04）、「タイヨウのうた」（06）、「牛に願いを Love＆Farm」（07）、「官僚たちの夏」（09）、NHK連続テレビ小説「おひさま」（11）など話題のドラマに出演する。映画では「東京大学物語」（06）で主演したほか、「TAJOMARU」（09）、「ラブコメ」（10）、「アフロ田中」（12年公開予定）などの出演作がある。座長を務めた「裏切りの街」（10）や「芸人交換日記」（11）などの舞台、CMでも活躍している。
